US needs Japan as Trump's China tariffs loom: Policy expert

From Yahoo! Finance, In Print, Video Appearance — Dec 4th, 2024

Alongside his recent tariff proposals, President-elect Donald Trump is pledging to block Nippon Steel’s acquisition of U.S. Steel, potentially using the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) to intervene.

“On the trade front, it’s a very big deal,” said Henrietta Treyz, Managing Partner and Director of Economic Policy at Veda Partners. “President-elect Trump has previously applied Section 232 tariffs on Japan, specifically steel and aluminum, and while exemptions have been negotiated, the U.S. still needs Japan—especially as trade tensions with China escalate. China has already restricted some critical mineral exports to the U.S.”

Treyz also weighed in on which consumer product categories could be most affected by Trump’s tariff policies and the broader economic implications.
