Trump may use Medicaid cuts to fund tax reform. These states would be hit hardest.

From Morning Star, In Print — Jan 23rd, 2025

President-elect Trump is targeting Medicaid as part of a broader push for spending cuts to fund an extension of the 2017 tax cuts. Medicaid now covers more than 72 million Americans and over 30% of the population in 11 states.

“Many Republican lawmakers are concerned by the growth in Medicaid enrollment and federal spending,” said Spencer Perlman, director of healthcare policy at Veda Partners. Henrietta Treyz, director of economic policy at Veda Partners, added, “Republicans are walking a fine line—pursuing entitlement reforms while avoiding backlash from voters who rely heavily on these programs.”

Healthcare stocks tied to Medicaid, including Centene, Molina Healthcare, and UnitedHealth, have already seen notable declines.
