With former President Trump returning to the White House, Medicaid—covering medical care for low-income Americans—could face significant cuts. While the program is increasingly run by private insurers and supported by rural hospitals, its size makes it a likely target as Republicans look to fund an extension of the 2017 tax cuts.
“Medicaid will be on the radar for Republicans, but major cuts are politically and logistically challenging,” said Henrietta Treyz, director of economic policy at Veda Partners. She noted that control of Congress could make spending reductions easier, though substantial reforms would still face obstacles.
